Mahonia media "Charity"
This wonderful evergreen shrub is not only deer resistant but winter flowering and fragrant. Once the flowers are finished in the spring blue fruits begin to form and are eventually eaten by birds. Hummingbirds which over winter on Vancouver Island are attracted to these plants. This will do equally well in dark shade and full sun. Prefers a bit of shade, once established drought resistant.

A great edging plant for hot, sunny locations. Well behaved and in flower a good portion of the summer makes this plant a must. Cat's do love this plant but there effect is pretty minor.
Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln'
This dwarf fountain grass has great foliage and is stunning when it's in flower. It has a max. size of 3' and looks great with other fall flowering perernials.
Phlomis russeliana
Not enough can be said about his plant. Hard to find, not sure why, it has heart shaped leaves and whorled pale yellow flowers that rise above the foliage during the summer. This plant does well in full sun or partial shade. The plant will eventually reach 3' high and the same in width.
Phyllostachys nigra
The black bamboo tends to be well behaved in this part of the world. Technically classified as a runner this bamboo has dramatic stems, that in there second year turn black hence the name. It does like a cozy location out of the wind and requires ample moisture. Ultimately it can reach 25' in height.
Polystichum acrosticoides
This is our native sword fern. What a great plant, the foliage is superb when placed in a shaded location. Very easy to please the plant gives a lot back. Very useful in creating a naturalistic setting.
