Acer circinatum is a lovely native maple that enjoys a cool understory location. This small multi branched tree/ large shrub is overlooked in pacific coast landscapes.
The fall colour is extremely good and the structure of the tree is very pleasing. A good addition to any garden.
Arctorstaphylos uva-ursi
Another native plant which is extremely useful. This plant really shines when planted above a wall or some area you wish to soften. No additional watering required once it has become established. White flowers are folllowed by red friut. Very low creeping woody plant.
Berberis 'Rose Glow'
Purple foliage is one of the dramatic attributes of this shrub. It makes a wonderful statement in any garden, large or small. Providing full sun to partial shade will keep the foliage an intense purple colour. It will eventually get 3' high, and 5' wide. Plant with this in mind, as you do not want to prune this plant.
Brunnera macrophylla
The original species which so many hybrids were spawned from. The species flowers more profusely and still has wonderful heart shape leafs. The leaves are a light green, and emerge very early in the year. This plant loves full to partial shade and produces many small blue forget me like flowers in the spring.
Buddleia glabosa
This is a strong growing plant which will reach 12' in hieght. Pruning after it flowers in June is one way of keeping it's size in check. The Orange oval flowers are quite stunning along with it's superb foliage. One needs a large space and full sun to accomidate this plant.
Buddleia japonica
A sun loving shrub which is rarely seen in cultivation. Purple flowers open throughout the summer making this Buddleia a winner. It's relatively short size is also a bonus, 6' high x 6' wide.
Calycanthus floridus
This shrub is very unusual in that is has flowers which smell like fermenting fruit. A wine lovers dream...It does get large so space should be considered, it will ultimately get 10' high as as wide. Full sun is ideal. The deer won't touch it so if space and sun are not an issue then it is worth a place in your garden.
Caryopteris "Longwood blue"
These sun loving shrubs that you prune back hard every year are very useful for a mixed border. The never outgrow their space. The silver foliage and late blue flowers are a hit in a hot border. Mix this with other fall flowering perennials for a great display.
Ceanothus "Joyce Coulter"
Ceanothus "Joyce Coulter" is a very useful prostrate shrub which will get 2' high but spread up to 8' in width. Great plant to send over a rough wall or rocky outcrop. Loves lots of sun and happy without water once it's established.
California lilac is heat loving evergreen shrub suited for Vancouver Island. This form was discovered in a garden in Victoria, BC and is very hardy. The blue flowers attract many insects including bees which cover the plant in May and June. When established Ceanothus can happily survive without any additional irrigation. It eventually achieves 8' high and the same in width. Enjoy this while it lasts as it is not a long lived plant.
